Anxiety and OCD

I understand how overwhelming it can be for children and teens to navigate the challenges of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and anxiety. These conditions can interfere with daily life, school performance, relationships, and self-esteem. However, with the right support and strategies, young individuals can learn to manage their symptoms and regain a sense of control and confidence.

Understanding OCD in Children and Teens

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a condition that causes intrusive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) aimed at reducing anxiety. These compulsions may provide temporary relief but can become time-consuming and distressing. Common symptoms in children and teens include:

  • Excessive hand washing or cleaning

  • Repeated checking (e.g., locks, schoolwork, or belongings)

  • Persistent fears of harm or making mistakes

  • Need for things to be “just right” or symmetrical

  • Repetitive counting, tapping, or saying certain words silently

Understanding Anxiety in Children and Teens

Anxiety is a natural response to stress, but for some children and teens, it can become overwhelming and interfere with daily activities. Anxiety disorders can manifest in different ways, including:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Constant worry about everyday events or activities

  • Social Anxiety: Intense fear of social situations and being judged

  • Separation Anxiety: Extreme distress when away from parents or caregivers

  • Panic Disorder: Sudden and intense episodes of fear, often with physical symptoms

How Therapy Can Help

Therapy can empower children and teens to understand and manage their thoughts and behaviors in healthy ways. I use evidence-based approaches, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helping young individuals recognize and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors

  • Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP): A gold-standard treatment for OCD that helps reduce compulsive behaviors by gradually facing fears in a safe environment

  • Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Teaching coping strategies to regulate emotions and reduce stress

  • Parent and Family Support: Equipping caregivers with tools to support their child’s progress at home
